Ps. 97.11 (conclusion)
Light shines out / for the righteous
and rejoicing / for the upright in heart.
Rejoice / you righteous ones / in Yhwh
and give thanks / to his holy name.
We have remarked on the fact that for the enemies of Yhwh there is a consuming fire whereas for the righteous Yhwh is a “light shining out”, in which there is rejoicing. These ‘righteous’ are the Yhwh lovers who have obeyed the Adam-command to ‘hate evil’ (vs. 10). Yhwh protects them and delivers them from the ‘hands of the wicked’. What is clear, then, is that this ‘light’ and the ‘flame’ are likely the same Presence of Yhwh. It is an active force for the righteous, burning up the wicked, yet enlivening the righteous. As such, it is very similar to the flame that three youths in Daniel are thrown into. They not only are not burned up by it, but they walk around in it with “another” (a divine being), meaning they are actually ushered into a divine presence (they are not just protected by blessed). For the wicked though, those that stoked the fire, they are consumed by the same flame.
