Ps. 32.5 (the earth is full of Yhwh's lovingkindness)

“He is the one / loving righteousness / and justice – the earth / is full / of Yhwh’s lovingkindness.” These lines develop and deepen the previous verse regarding Yhwh’s word/work. There, we noted out his word/work were ‘right’ and ‘true’ because they accurately represented Yhwh’s ‘heart’. As we said before, a ‘word’ is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ based on whether it accurately reflects the interior heart of the speaker (the wicked, for example, speak ‘honey’ but their hearts are ‘graves’). Here, we catch a glimpse of Yhwh’s heart: it is one “loving righteousness and justice”. Yhwh’s ‘inner’ state, that which is expressed in his word/work, is this love. We note here, then, that Yhwh’s expressions are not ‘simply’ true or right, they are not simply one can rely on as accurate. Rather, as the lines next states, his word/works “fill the earth” with Yhwh’s lovingkindness. This is a rather astonishing assertion. ‘Lovingkindness’ is something generally held to describe Yhwh’s covenantal ‘impulse’—that which draws him to reach out to, protect, redeem and simply move toward Israel. Here, that same covenantal act is described as ‘filling’ the entire earth. Yhwh as covenant partner has become closely identified with Yhwh as Creator and the same ‘ingredients’ are poured into each (the covenant and creation itself). Creation therefore doesn’t simply reveal Yhwh’s ‘power’: here we see that creation itself bears witness, like a word spoken, to the speaker’s heart which is one of “loving righteousness and justice” and “full of lovingkindness”. And not simply creation; we recall that the opening lines were directed at “the righteous” and the “upright ones”. These individuals embody and are objects of Yhwh’s love of “righteousness” (“the righteous”) and “justice” (“upright ones”). They are then words/works of Yhwh that, in turn, are objects of his love—this is precisely the dynamic embodied in Genesis: Yhwh creates and then ‘sees that it is good’. Creation can, in its own freedom (as enacting righteousness and justice), be both a spoken word of Yhwh and a pleasant ‘surprise’ to him (and, therefore, an object of love). There is one final aspect to this as we take a brief look ahead: describing creation as ‘full of Yhwh’s lovingkindness’, as we have noted, indicates that  it is full of Yhwh’s covenantal care and concern. As we have seen, the most characteristic aspect of Yhwh’s covenantal ‘action’ is redemption and deliverance.  The ‘earth’ then would operate in the same fashion: as ‘for’ Yhwh’s chosen.
